A new radio will help closed surveillance camera operators to liaise more efficiently with police in Colchester.

The closed circuit television centre, off the High Street, has been given an Airwaves radio terminal, allowing them to both hear police transmissions and to contact officers directly.

It is hoped that the link will prove vital during incidents.

Currently, CCTV operators rely on officers phoning them with details before they can turn their cameras on an incident if they have not already spotted it. The Airwaves link means they can hear the original radio transmission, and will be able to look at the correct camera immediately.

This could save vital minutes.

The other advantage is that if a CCTV operator spots an incident in the town, they can radio directly through to the relevant police officers, rather than trying to reach them on the phone.
