Charity groups hoping to get a day centre once threatened with closure back on its feet are appealing for volunteers.

Foundry Court Day Centre, in Manningtree, was closed down for three days a week after Essex County Council bosses said it was no longer financially viable to keep it open.

The Colchester Road centre, which helped to care for the frail and elderly, was left open for just two days a week in July. Plans were announced to hold a variety of activities and services run by voluntary organisations instead.

Age Concern launched a lunch club last month and it has so far been a success, but future plans for the centre could be threatened if new volunteers are not found.

Deborah Jones, of Age Concern, said: “The whole project is very much dependent on volunteers, but we are hopeful and optimistic, and we are just really trying our best to get the volunteers we need.

“We are appealing for help from people and we hope the community will get involved to make it a thriving lunch club where elderly people can come and socialise.”
