A community fireworks event, which has attracted thousands of people for almost a decade, is in danger of completely fizzling out.

The annual Wix Fireworks Spectacular is marking its tenth anniversary next Wednesday, but after this year organisers have decided to step down.

They hope new people can come forward to see the event continue into the future.

Veronica Mellor, of the organising committee, said: “We have run it for ten years now and we took it on because there were no fireworks at the time.

“We all had small children and our husbands did the training but now we have to work. We have to take time off to do it and we are hoping someone will take it up.”

About 400 people turn up to the event each year and the event has always taken place on November 5 – Guy Fawkes night.

Cash made from this year’s display is to go towards equipment for older children in the village play area.

About £3,000 is needed.

Gates for the display open at 6pm and refreshments are available.

Admission costs £3 for adults and £2 for children.
