Safety experts have been dishing out lifesaving advice and high-visibility clothing in a bid to drive down road deaths.
Clacton was one of five places chosen to host Essex Casualty Reduction Board’s winter roadshow.
A total of 91 people were killed or seriously injured on Tendring’s roads in 2007 – the fourth highest figure in 12 Essex districts.
There was a sharp increase when the clocks went back which has highlighted the importance of the Be Seen – Be Safe campaign.
The road safety team targeted children and older people in Clacton town square yesterday to encourage them to wear something bright and reflective.
Motorists were also urged to be extra aware of cyclists and pedestrians when out and about.
Norman Hume, chairman of the Casualty Reduction Board, said: ‘‘Children and adults need to be alert to dangers of not being seen when on the road, especially at twilight or after dark and in bad weather.
“By taking simple precautions such as wearing fluorescent or reflective clothing, and ensuring lights and reflectors are used when cycling, many accidents could be avoided.’’ Parents have been urged to buy bright or light coloured winter coats or jackets with a reflective strip, and attach reflective or fluorescent tape to bags.
