A VAN is set to be pushed across Essex to raise money for soldiers.

A fundraising procession will converge on Colchester Garrison to present welfare packages to be sent to troops, and cash for the Help the Heroes charity collected from across the county.

The van will be pulled through Chelmsford, Brentwood and Romford town centres on its way to Colchester on November 29, where it will be dragged from the town hall to the garrison.

Romford-based car dealership Eddy Grimstead has organised the event.

Company spokesman Gavin Harris said that the original idea had been to manhandle a Citroen Relay van specially emblazoned with the Union Jack all the way from Romford.

He added: “But it simply wasn’t practical to push the van all the way – the police basically said they wouldn’t let us anywhere near the A12, so we’ve got a dozen volunteers who are going to push the van through town centres, but would welcome anyone else who wants to help.”

Mr Harris said the firm hoped to raise “a five-figure sum” on the principle of “as many little donations from as many people as possible”.

Schools or clubs wishing to make donations or help push the van can call Gavin Harris on 01708 758503.
