POPPY appeal fundraisers hope residents will go the extra few yards to remember the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.

Organisers are concerned the location of the Clacton poppy fund shop – 39 Jackson Road – will not prove as popular as previously more central sites.

They have urged shoppers to contribute any cash they can spare and wear their poppies with pride.

Former RAF serviceman Bill Gow, Clacton’s poppy fund organiser, is running the shop from 9am to 4pm until November 8.

It sells wreaths and crosses which can be dedicated to the Royal Naval Association, Royal Air Force and other armed forces.

Poppies that can be attached with a sticky back instead of a pin are also on sale for the first time.

This November marks the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

The Royal British Legion is honouring the memory of the war’s heroes by planting a field of poppies at the Menin Gate in Flanders, Belgium, for Armistice Day on November 11.
