ONE of Colchester Zoo’s two orangutans has died.
Djambe, aged 30, was found dead on Saturday.
The female and her companion Rajang had moved to the zoo’s new Orangutan Forest enclosure at the beginning of October.
They had been given a general anaesthetic to help with the relocation, and staff were said to be pleased at how they had adapted.
A medical examination at the time revealed an irregular-shaped mass, believed to be a tumour, on the right side of Djambe’s body.
Staff could not examine this properly at the time, but took blood samples to be tested. These later came back normal.
A few days after the move, Djambe developed a breathing infection and was given antibiotics by a vet.
She appeared to respond well, and on Friday she was examined and found to have made a full recovery.
