A nightclub is set to open on Sundays after it was granted an extension to hours.
Liquid & Envy, formerly the Hippodrome, in Colchester’s High Street, was given permission by borough councillors on Friday to change its current premises licence, despite an objection from the Dutch Quarter Residents’ Association.
An extra half an hour has been added to the club’s licence for Sundays, and it intends to open until 1.30am on this day.
But Dimitri Murray, a residents’ association committee member, felt peaceful Sunday nights in the Dutch Quarter would be ruined as a result.
After the meeting, Glen Freeman, junior manager at Liquid & Envy, said he was pleased with the outcome of the licensing sub-committee hearing.
Chairman of the committee Barrie Cook said members were satisfied by the club’s controls – such as a policy to eject unruly customers from the front entrance – and felt Mr Dimitri had not provided enough evidence that customers had been or would be contributing to public nuisance.
