PATIENTS suffering from coughs and colds are being reminded not to ask their GP for antibiotics.

As part of Ask About Medicines Week – from November 3 to 7 – NHS North East Essex has produced a card for GPs to give to patients who report with a virus.

Paul Breame, head of medicines management, said: “We know from the feedback we receive from GPs that many people expect antibiotics prescribed to them if they have a cold, cough, flu or ear-ache.

“The purpose of this information card – you could look upon it as an alternative prescription – is for GPs to be able to hand patients all the information they need to help with their ailment.

“The card explains the symptoms, best treatment and other useful notes on common viruses.”

The information card is being supported by a leaflet, Get Smart – Know When Antibiotics Work, which will be available at GP surgeries, pharmacies, dentists and libraries.
