DAVE Huzzey believes Colchester United’s BBC Essex Senior Cup Final against Redbridge tonight is a ‘really important’ match for the club.

The U’s under-21 side are looking to lift the county cup when they face their Pitching In Isthmian League division north opponents at Dagenham & Redbridge FC’s Chigwell Construction Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).

U’s transition coach Huzzey said: “I’m really excited about the occasion, as are the lads, and I think it could be a real good game against a tough Redbridge side.

“I think it's really important. The games and every round have been excellent as a learning curve, but actually for the club to go on and be in the final and hopefully win it would be excellent and of real importance.”

Huzzey claims Colchester will take extra motivation from getting so close to lifting the trophy last season but watching the Senior Cup Final from the stands in 2023.

“I actually went last year,” said Huzzey.

“We got knocked out in the semi-final, and it was gutting to see that final go on and us not being involved in it from our side, obviously.”

Gazette:

Redbridge manager George Christou is equally as excited at the prospect of County Cup success.

He said: “It's a big honour to play in the County Cup Final, being an underdog in probably every time we've played.

“We’ve played Chelmsford, we’ve played Southend, we’ve played Concord and Maldon and we’ve probably been the underdog in every round.

“We’ve been an advocate this season of going strong in every round because we want to try and win as many games and as many accolades as possible, really.

“We’ve got to make the most of it while we’re there.

“Yes, we’ve got to be happy to be there and enjoy the moment, but again, make the most of it and try and win the game.”

Colchester fans will be situated in the SD Samuels Stand (Blocks 6-8), while Redbridge supporters will be in the Jax Sun Services Stand (Blocks 1-57).
