A BOY left upset after not being able to help a man sleeping rough in the pouring rain has raised more than £100 for homelessness charity by make delicious baked goods.
Percy Moss, 6, a Stanway Fiveways Primary School student, has been hard at work baking tasty treats in an effort to raise funds for Emmaus Colchester.
The charity was founded in 1999 and is dedicated to helping people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion by providing them with a home and meaningful work.
Percy was inspired to do his bit after spotting a homeless man looking for a lift while on his way home from London with his mum, Gina Moss, 36.
Percy asked his mum, a nurse practitioner in the gynaecology oncology department at Colchester Hospital, if they could help the man but Gina explained it was not possible.
This moment weighed heavily on Percy so, as a talented baker, it was agreed he would bake chocolate brownies and rocky road bits to raise funds for the Emmaus.
Gina said: “We wanted to do it for Emmaus because we want to support the homeless people in the charity and as a way of supporting our local community.
“From February 19 I started contacting people, we contacted our family, friends, work colleagues, and said we were going to be making brownies and rocky road for £1 a piece.
“The more he did, the more people wanted.”
Percy’s cakes have been so well received there has even been repeat orders.
Having finished his final bakes last week, it is now believed he made roughly 100 pieces of cake in total, raising £153 for Emmaus Colchester.
Gina said: “Percy really is a sweet hearted boy. It makes me incredibly proud.
“He has made me feel warm inside, it’s an amazing achievement for a six year old to be thinking of other people.
"He’s a very gentle soul and his thoughts are often on others.
“He absolutely loved it, he has two little cash pots in the living room for the fundraising.
"He is feeling excited and loves hearing feedback from people who purchased the cakes."
Percy and Gina will donate the money to the charity within the next few weeks.
