VILLAGERS have been left feeling "angry" after senseless vandals "desecrated" a Christmas tree but have defiantly said: "We do not give in that easily".

Boxted’s Christmas tree was unveiled to the public outside the village hall on December 3, officially declaring the start of Christmas in the area.

However, residents were left shocked on Tuesday after discovering the tree, donated by Fred Smith Christmas Trees, in Straight Road, had been vandalised.

According to Boxted Parish Council, the tree's light and decorations were broken during the destruction, which has left it in a sorry-looking state.

James Collitt, a Boxted parish councillor, has played a key role in organising the Christmas tree since he came to the village about six years ago.

He said: “Boxted's village Christmas tree which is positioned outside the village hall has been totally desecrated by mindless vandals.

"All the lights destroyed, all baubles smashed and scattered along the car park. Even the star has been removed leaving the bare empty tree leaning badly.

"It's in a really sorry state. This horrible act has been done at night, after 9pm in the last day or so. Police will be informed and a full investigation will take place.”

Despite the unprovoked and mindless attack, Karen Thompson, council clerk, has said the community will remain defiant and not be put off marking the festive season once more.

A church fundraiser has already been launched with a view of replacing the broken decorations and bringing Christmas back to the village.

Karen said: “We’re going to light it up again, we don’t give in easily.

“We don’t know if it’s people connected to the village or people who came when it was quiet and dark.

“We’re looking to put CCTV as a deterrent and to put people off anti-social behaviour.

“The council were initially angry and then just sad about the Christmas tree. It’s such a symbol of the community and village.”

Anyone who has any information which could help the investigation is asked to email Karen at clerk@boxted-pc.gov.uk.
