A NEGLECTED road in Colchester has become plagued with a whopping 30 potholes, according to a councillor who fears the state of the city's street are rapidly "getting worse".

Layer Road, Berechurch Hall Road and Gosbecks Roads have long suffered from pesky potholes, much to the annoyance of drivers and residents alike.

Despite being riddled with potholes - Layer Road, for example, reportedly has 30 - the streets are said to have been neglected for months on end despite a constant flurry of complaints.

Ward councillor Dave Harris says he receives between ten to 15 emails everyday from locals complaining about the poor condition of the dodgy roads.

One motorist has even told him about how a crater in Colchester resulted in his tyre suffering a puncture.

Despite raising his concerns regularly with Essex County Council, Mr Harris says the holes have still yet to be properly repaired.

”I just feel it is a managed decline," said Mr Harris.

“Every time you go over the Gosbecks Road roundabout, it’s full of bumps and these things are getting worse.

“I was promised back in the summertime they would be resolved, but now it is looking to be early New Year.

“It’s frustrating, I will keep lobbying to ensure these potholes aren’t forgotten.”

Mr Harris has now accused “the hierarchy” that is Essex Highways of not taking the matter seriously enough and worries the roads will only continue to deteriorate if action is not taken.

He also urged residents to continue escalating their worries as doing so provides him with “ammunition to take these issues higher”.

He added: “The roads are not being maintained to the adequate standard they were built for.

“The roads are breaking, I question if we have the right strategy in place when it comes to these issues."

“Anyone can email me the pothole they spot, give me the exact location and a photo, then I am happy to contact Essex Highways.”

According to Essex County Council, a pothole is categorised as a hole deeper than 50 millimetres and 100 millimetres wide in both directions.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “In order to maximise our resources, we have to prioritise and schedule our work to fix the most urgent issues first.

"All defects reported to us are assessed by an inspector and prioritised accordingly.

"Members of the public can report issues at our online report it tool here: essexhighways.org/tell-us."
