WONDERFUL Christmastime is fast-approaching and Colchester is no stranger to celebrating the festive period in style.

Whether with lights or grand gestures from its residents, the city is also made to look and feel special during the Christmas season for visitors and locals alike.

Here we take a deep dive into the history of Colchester at Christmas as we look back at the various ways the city has commemorated the occasion in the past.

In 2013, Colchester Sixth Form College was transformed into a winter wonderland to raise money for the Red Cross disaster appeal for the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan.

The following year, the educational institution also filled more than 100 hampers to be donated to people in need, all in the name of generosity at Christmas.

Speaking at the time, principal Ian McNaughton said: “We are very proud.

"The group have made a fantastic contribution to the wider community, including putting together generous Christmas hampers for the needy."

Then in 2018, the historic Lucas Vaults in Colchester Castle were turned into a magical Santa's Grotto.

Tim Young, councillor responsible for business and culture, said: "In my opinion, it makes for one of the most magical places to see Santa in Colchester."

The annual Christmas lights switch on extravaganza has also always proven a popular must-attend event, as has the city centre's festive market which sees small businesses sell the perfect stocking fillers.
