Specially-equipped fire engines could be scrapped as part of a major overhaul of the Essex fire service.

The rescue tenders, which carry cutting equipment often used at car accidents, are under threat according to plans which have just been released for consultation.

The document outlines proposals for the way the service deals with emergencies in Essex for the next three years.

The report claims that rescue tenders have been superseded by new technology.

Mick Rogers, north eastern divisional representative for the National Fire Brigades Union, said: "We are opposed to any form of cuts, be it in crewing or provision of resources."

Consultation on the plan runs from July 7 to September 28. During that time the plan will be available to view at www.essex-fire.gov.uk
