A geography teacher kept his criminal record secret from his school bosses, a hearing was told.

Ronan Friel had five convictions, but failed to reveal them to colleagues at Sir Charles Lucas Arts College in Greenstead, Colchester.

He also lied about needing time off for a hospital appointment when he was, in fact, due at court.

Mr Friel admitted allegations of unacceptable professional conduct at a hearing before the General Teaching Council (GTC) yesterday.

He was given a conditional registration order for two years, which means he must not be convicted or cautioned for any criminal offences.
