WHEN two young men win £1,000 you might expect them to hit the town.

But not brothers James and Joe Hawken.

When they won the prize money for being voted the top carers in the Anglia region, they knew straight away what it would be spent on.

The brothers were named ITV Anglia East Carer of the Year for caring for their mum Jaye who suffers from Frederick's Ataxia.

The rare debilitating condition affects the nervous system and leads to a lack of co-ordination of limb movements and problems with speaking. The illness has left Jaye in a wheelchair and needing constant care.

Jaye, 44, is currently helped by her working dog Disney - but Disney is now more than 12-years-old and the family wanted her to get a helping paw.

With the prize money, James, who is in the Royal Navy, and Joe, a student at Philip Morant College in Colchester, bought chocolate labrador Daisy, who is now 11-weeks-old.

Jaye's husband Michael, who is recovering from a spine operation, said: "The dogs are like two youngsters together. It has given Disney a real boost.

"Jaye will train Daisy herself. The puppy has learnt to sit and the next thing is for her to go forward with fetching and carrying."

James, 21, and Joe, 17, of Berechurch Hall Road, Colchester, have helped their mother with a range of tasks since they were just four and eight years old.

The brothers were chosen to represent Essex in ITV Anglia Carer of the Year awards and after being selected as regional finalists, they went through to the national finals which were part of the Pride of Britain awards.
