Memories of a Second World War pillbox before it became a target for vandals are being sought as a community art project gives it a fresh look.

Before the Monkwick estate was built, the bunker on Stansted Road was part of the Colchester Stop Line, a network of fortifications built to defend the town and its military installations against the threat of a German invasion.

Ward councillor Dave Harris (Lab, Berechurch) has worked with Monkwick Residents' Association to get funding to spruce up the pillbox, opposite St Margaret's Church.

Local artist Lisa Cox has been commissioned to work with local children to design and paint a mural on the structure, which will then be finished off with a coat of anti-graffiti paint.
