Motorists using the A12 this morning are being warned to expect delays following a four-car collision near Hatfield Peverel.
Police and fire crews were called to the scene just before 8am following a collision involving a blue VW Passat, a white Ford panel van, a black Nissan X-Trail and a silver Toyota Yaris on the southbound carriageway.
By 8.30am tailbacks stretched back two miles.
Fire crews from Chelmsford, Witham and Colchester were called to the scene but no-one needed to be rescued.
It is not yet known if there are any injuries.
