THE sun shone for young footballers from schools across Colchester when they took part in a football tournament.

About 140 year seven pupils from Thurstable, Plume, Stanway, St Helena, Philip Morant, Sir Charles Lucas, Colchester Royal Grammar and St Mary's School took part in the fourth annual Fairtrade Football Tournament at Thurstable School, Tiptree.

The 11 and 12-year-olds were given a short talk on Fairtrade by Tarkan Ahmet, from organiser Loofers Food and Coffee, before taking part in the tournament.

In the final of the girls' tournament, Thurstable beat Plume 1-0 while in the boys' competition, Stanway beat Plume, also 1-0 Each of the schools was given a Fairtrade football while various goodies were handed out for star individual performances.

Chris Taylor, from co- organiser Colchester Blackwater School Sports Partnership, said the day had been a fun way to raise awareness for a good cause.

"It went very well," he said. "It was a really good day and the sun shone as well so it was a very good afternoon."
