An unpopular idea to knock down houses to reduce pollution in a Colchester street looks set to be scrapped.
Colchester Council was considering the viability of placing compulsory purchase orders on properties at the narrow East Hill end of Brook Street and demolishing them, as part of an action plan to combat pollution caused by congestion there.
But a draft action plan to improve air quality there now states the idea, estimated to cost between £1 million and £5 million, had been dropped following consultation with residents.
Meanwhile, the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of three other schemes are to be investigated over the next year.
Traffic signals could be introduced at the north end of Brook Street, while timing at signals in the south could be changed to reduce queueing.
A Traffic Regulation Order could be introduced to restrict the times heavy goods vehicles use the road, while innovative paving blocks, which effectively soak in pollution, are being looked at.
