THE name on the front of a department store planned as part of a redevelopment of Colchester town centre remains uncertain.

A big store is at the heart of plans to revitalise the St Botolph's area.

The purchase of Williams and Griffin by Fenwick has reduced possible candidates to occupy the flagship position.

The Gazette understands that House of Fraser is the likely occupant, after John Lewis was given first refusal and declined.

Brian Jarvis, Colchester Council regeneration portfolio holder, was tight-lipped.

"Nothing has been signed or agreed, and I'm not in a position to give out names or add to speculation," he said.

A spokesman for developers Caddick said there were "ongoing talks of a confidential nature" about the department store.

"As soon as we have information we can release to the public, we will," he said.
