A POLICE officer who saved the life of an eight-year-old boy is due to be commended.

Sgt Alexander Wisbey, of Stanway, will be praised for his professionalism in the face of a life-threatening situation.

The officer attended a call for assistance in Colchester on November 15, 2006, where he discovered the young boy. He was seriously ill and barely breathing.

Sgt Wisbey quickly assessed the situation and began giving the boy mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the ambulance arrived.

It was claimed that his actions "undoubtedly" saved the youngster's life.

The Chief Constable, Roger Baker, will present him with a commendation at a special ceremony today.

Another Colchester officer will also be recognised at the same awards.

PC Robert Newlyn is commended alongside another officer for the professionalism he displayed while helping murder victim Westley Odger in the last minutes of his life.

The officers reassured the public and secured vital evidence while ensuring Westley was not alone in the chaotic scene that followed his stabbing on the Greenstead estate on September 12, 2005.

Their quick-thinking helped see a man convicted of murder and sentenced to life in August, 2006. His half-brother was convicted of manslaughter.

At the trial His Honour Judge Ball QC commended the officers for their efforts.
