Armed police responded to a report of a man with a gun on a Colchester estate.
Up to eight police cars were sent to St Joseph Road, in the St John's area, shortly after 5.35pm last night.
Police had received a call from a concerned member of the public who said they had seen a man with a handgun.
A man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm.
