Concerns about a possible new nuclear power station are to be discussed tonight in West Mersea.
Bradwell, two miles across the River Blackwater from Mersea, is on a short-list of potential sites for a new generation of nuclear power stations.
A public meeting has been called by Professor Andy Blowers, with a panel of experts talking through the possible options, and answering residents' questions.
Prof Blowers said that issues of safety and security, waste and the need for new power stations will be discussed.
"Nothing has been said by the nuclear industry about the risks this could present to Mersea, and indeed Colchester, and I want to help balance the picture," he said.
"The existing station is not being fully cleaned up for another 100 years, and you have to question whether it makes sense to put a new one in a sensitive environment that is liable to be affected by climate change."
Town mayor Alan Mogridge will chair the meeting, which takes place at the MICA Centre, on High Street, at 7.30pm.
