SEVERE gales are set to batter north Essex and residents are being warned to batten down the hatches.

The winds are likely to reach between 50 and 70mph tomorrow and could be strong enough to cause minor damage such a dislodging roof tiles and blowing down fences, said Gazette weatherman Terry Mayes.

"The advice would be to batten down the hatches and prepare as much as you can," he said.

Essex Police is advising residents to secure any outside property.

Motorists are urged to check weather forecasts before making any journeys.
