A woman suffered serious head injuries in a collision near Birch.
The 41-year-old Lithuanian woman, of Colchester, was driving a Ford Sierra car along the B1022 Maldon Road when she was involved in a collision with a Ford Fiesta car driven by a 20-year-old man from Kelvedon.
Firefighters were also called to the scene and used cutting equipment to free the woman, who was taken to Colchester General Hospital.
The driver of the Ford Fiesta was also taken to hospital in Colchester but was released.
Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw the accident at 10pm last night, or saw the cars prior to the collision, to come forward.
