A herd of 10 cows escaped and were seen walking along a busy road - prompting police to step in and act.

The animals were seen by drivers and residents this morning walking loose on the B1508 Colchester Road between West Bergholt and Wormingford.

Officers took to social media to advise drivers to be on alert, and keep them updated, while throwing in the odd pun for good measure.

Using the hashtag #MoooveAlong, Essex Police Road Policing Team reported officers in cars were "Behind the cows following at a safe distance to protect them whilst trying to find their owner," adding: "At this time they aren't causing udder chaos."

Minutes later, an update reported: "A splinter group have gone into a crop field on Wormingford Grove, away from the road, we still have one rogue cow giving officers from @EPColchester some beef.

Later, police reported: "We found approximately 10 escaped cows - the lone ranger has joined the others. However, having found the farmer, there are approx 60 unac"cow"nted for. If you see any of the herd please call 101 or 999 depending on circs quoting incident 209 -17/7/21. Heffer nice day!"
