A police officer is set to be charged with two counts of common assault in connection with the death of a father-of-three.

The charges follow an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) into the death of Ronnie O'Reilly on June 14.

Police were investigating after Mr O'Reilly, of Berkeley Road, Clacton, was heard shouting at his 12-year-old son.

Shortly afterwards, tugboat captain Mr O'Reilly collapsed on to the kitchen floor suffering from chest pains and died on his way to hospital.

A post-mortem examination showed he died of natural causes.

David Petch, IPCC Commissioner for Essex, sent a report to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The CPS announced its intention to charge an officer with two counts of common assault, one each involving Mr O'Reilly and his wife Moira O'Reilly.

An officer has been summonsed to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on January 16. Essex Police said it was a matter for the IPCC.
