A SHIP which played a major part of Harwich's maritime history has returned to the port for the first time in 20 years.

The former MS Speedlink Vanguard arrived at Harwich International Port on Wednesday on business.

It was the last service to operate from the train ferry terminal when it closed in 1987, and has not docked in the town since.

The vessel's return co-incides with the 25th anniversary of a tragic collision it was involved in.Colin Crawford, port manager when the Speedlink Vanguard was in service at Harwich, said the ferry's return would generate a lot of interest.

This week saw the 25th anniversary of a collision between the European Gateway freighter and the Speedlink Vanguard.

The European Gateway sank in the approached to Harwich Harbour with the loss of six lives.
