Traffic in Thorpe's already choked High Street could be brought to a standstill if a supermarket gets a delivery bay, it has been claimed.

Supermarket giant Tesco is planning to build a layby outside its Tesco Express convenience store, for deliveries.

However, villagers and parish councillors have been concerned about the size of the articulated vehicles that deliver to the store for some time, and they claim the lorries cause complete mayhem while in the village unloading.

If the layby goes ahead and delivery lorries arrived outside the permitted time, and the layby was being used by shoppers, the village would grind to a standstill, they fear.

Tony Gallagher, of Tesco Transportation, has said this would not happen as deliveries would have to be carried out during the two hour allocated time and it was his intention to work out a schedule and also see if weekend deliveries can be withdrawn.

He would also be looking at the problem of drivers taking their break while delivering to the store.

Members of the public who attended the meeting also voiced concerns about the store's staff parking in the narrow High Street and the fact that the store stayed open until 11pm.

Mr Gallagher said he had taken on board the concerns and would work to see what could be done.
