A bid to save Frinton's famous railway gates has been officially backed by councillors.

Tendring Council had already given a unanimous approval to the campaign to stop Network Rail replacing the manual gates with an automatic crossing.

The town council has also now put its name to a motion of support, after a request by resident Nick Turner.

Mayor Terry Allen was concerned the move would be unnecessary because the council had supported the campaign from the start.

But members unanimously agreed to put their names to a modified version of Mr Turner's motion, reaffirming their belief that the gates were an "iconic symbol".

Network Rail wants to replace the 100-year-old gates with automatic barriers operated from Colchester as part of a £100 million upgrade on the Colchester to Clacton and Walton lines.
