A former opal mining engineer believes he has invented a structure that will revolutionise wind turbines and sea defences.

John Robertson says his wind barn will put an end to controversial turbines, like the ones proposed between Clacton and St Osyth, and pay for coastal protection.

The St Osyth inventor has drawn up an idea that sees the turbines on their sides in massive barns dug into the ground into which the wind is channelled.

"The potential is huge," said the father-of-two.

"You can put it in so many places because it is not visible, it will not generate noise, it will not stop aeroplanes flying.

"This new invention will happily fit in urban areas or among the towers, so the available land space for wind farms may double its electricity output."
