A VETERAN Lib Dem has apologised for using the term “loony left” in a public letter.

Lib Dem councillor Martin Goss labelled a vociferous opposition to the controversial cultural quarter plans as "clueless loony lefties".

But he was challenged at a meeting of Colchester Council's cabinety last night by Young Greens member Katie Francis.

She told the waste boss the term was offensive to people who had suffered with mental health conditions.

She asked him to apologise for using the term and criticised it being used by other councillors during the meeting.

Mr Goss apologised for any offence but clarified he had not used the term in that context.

The “loony left” is a well-known term to describe those considered to be politically far-left.

The term was widely used in the General Election campaign in 1987.

Mr Goss said: “I take mental health very seriously.

“It wasn’t meant to be derogatory and if you are offended I apologise.

“I will use a better filter in future.”
