A MOTORCYCLIST involved in an early morning crash has sadly died, police have confirmed.

The man in his 20s was found in Greenstead Road, Colchester, shortly after 4am on Saturday with serious head injuries.

It is believed he crashed into a metal sign post close to the junction of Hythe Station Road.

He was taken to hospital but died later from his injuries.

The man's family are being supported by specialist officers.

Police were contacted by colleagues in the East of England Ambulance Service.

They initially appealed to find four witnesses who stopped to help the man after the crash.

Three women have been identified but police still want to talk to a man - believed to be a taxi driver - who stopped.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "The man was driving a grey, possibly private hire taxi, and was described as black, with short cropped hair and a moustache.

"He spoke to ambulance staff with what was believed to be a foreign accent, and is thought to be between 35 and 45 years old.

"If this is you, or you know this witness, please contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit as soon as possible on 01245 240590 or email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk."
