A LUXURY jewellers will be closing its doors in Colchester.

Shoppers heard Goldsmiths, which has a shop in Culver Square, will be shutting in the near future.

The company operates over 120 showrooms across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, selling top brands including Cartier, Tag Huer, Michael Kors and Olivia Burton.

The Gazette called the company a number of times to find out when it would be closing, and the reason why, but did not receive a response.

Bosses at Culver Square said it was not unusual to see different stores come and go, but were sad to see the jewellery giant close.

Rupert Milne, asset manager at M&G Real Estate, said: “All shopping destinations see changes in their store line-up and we are sorry that Goldsmiths has decided to close its store at the centre.

“Culver Square attracts a lot of interest from a range of national and local brands and we are always in discussion with potential new arrivals.

“We expect to be able to announce more brands joining our line-up soon.”

Other big brands in Culver Square include Superdry, H&M, Debenhams and Accessorize.

The shopping centre is also home to other jewellery shops, including Pandora, Ernest Jones and Fraser Hart.

The jewellery shop is not the first to say goodbye to the town centre.

At the end of last year Upchurch Jewellers in St Nicholas Passage closed, mourning the “slow death” of town centre trade for independent businesses.

A decision on the town’s BID proposal is due to come in within the next few months, which, if approved, would pave the way for businesses to have more of a say on improving the town centre.
