MOTORBIKE riding raiders smashed into a department store and stole "high value" designer handbags.

Police are appealing for information after the burglary at Fenwick in Colchester High Street.

Two people on motorbikes smashed the front window of the popular department store at roughly 3.30am on Tuesday.

They then stole a number of Mulberry handbags and fled.

Police believe they used a sledgehammer to get into the store.

A spokesman for Essex Police said they believed the two burglars were working in tandem with someone driving a car.

He said:"We believe the suspects wore black clothing and were possibly in convoy with a car.

"We are currently carrying out forensics at the scene and are in the process of reviewing CCTV.

"Anyone with information, CCTV or dash cam footage is asked to contact Colchester CID quoting incident 79 of 17/04 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
