A boy racer involved in a car crash which killed a teenage girl has today been given community work and banned from driving.
Daniel Young was behind the wheel of a Subaru Impreza rally-style car which slid out of control in Mersea Road, Colchester, in December.
Lauren Evans, 17, a backseat passenger, died after the accident.
Young, 21, of Mandeville Road, Marks Tey, admitted careless driving and was sentenced at Colchester Magistrates' Court.
He was ordered to do 60 hours of unpaid community work, was banned from driving for two years and will pay £60 costs.
District judge David Cooper was frustrated he could not jail Young.
He said: "Friends and family will say how inadequate the powers that I have are, and I can only agree they are.
"I can only work within the limit of those powers."
Speaking outside the court, Lauren's mother Jeanette Evans said her daughter had been "let down by the justice system".
