Plans to install the longest zip wire in the East of England at Great Notley Country Park is pressing ahead, but is set to cost two-and-a-half times more than initial estimates.

Essex County Council has applied for permission to construct the 500m long zip wire in a bid to draw an extra 13,000 visitors to the park each year.

Initially it was estimated funds of around £100,000 would be enough to pay for the development, however Essex County Council has revised the figure and agreed to allocate £252,000 of capital funding to the project.

When operational, the council hopes the 500m zip wire will bring in tourists from the area and further afield.

Based on an expected charge of £8 for its use, County Hall estimates the zip line will bring in just over £55,000 per year after costs such as staffing are paid out.

At least two jobs will be created by the development, whilst two parallel lines will run side by side so thrill-seekers can use them at the same time.

Landscaping and building work will also need to take place at the park to accommodate for the new facility.

A spokesperson for Essex County Council said: "Following a detailed review of costs the initial estimate for the new equipment was increased and approved.

"We believe the zip wire will be a popular addition to what’s already on offer at the park and continues the programme of investments we are making to provide visitors with the best experience at our Country Parks."

Last year, Braintree Council, Essex County Council and representatives for fitness franchise David Lloyd discussed plans to create an activity centre at Great Notley Country Park.

The zip-line is thought one aspect of this development, which in total could create up to 85 jobs.
