CAMPAIGNERS are calling for fresh safety measures after a series of serious accidents on a “dangerous” road.

In December, 17-year-old Owen Mizielinski suffered life-threatening injuries after the Mercedes he was a passenger in crashed with a car in Fingringhoe Road in Rowhedge.

He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where he was put on a life support machine.

It is understood he is now recovering from his injuries but he faces a long road to a full recovery.

Last week, two people had to be freed from cars after a serious crash on the same road.

Now safety campaigners are calling for the speed limit on the road to be reduced from 60mph and for a mini-roundabout to be installed at a dangerous stretch of road close to Birch Brook.

Mike Lilley, Colchester councillor for Old Heath and the Hythe, said action must be taken before anyone dies on the road.

He added: “There isn’t a person in Rowhedge who doesn’t think the speed limit should be cut.

“During the winter, the road is really bad for black ice but anyone who doesn’t know that won’t take necessary precautions. The problem is, it is hard to get any changes to roads unless there has been a death on it.

“We do not want to wait until someone dies to make it safer.”

Mr Lilley added: “It is only going to happen more often.

“About half of the new homes in Rowhedge Wharf are now occupied, which means there are a lot more cars on the roads around Rowhedge. It’s about time action was taken.”

Mr Lilley is working alongside fellow Labour councillor Adam Fox and Lee Scordis to lobby for the change.

The trio plan to organise a public meeting to allow as many residents as possible to have their say.

A date is yet to be set but it will be publicised on the Rowhedge Village Facebook group.

Essex County Council is responsible for roads and any decision on whether to drop the speed limit or install traffic-calming measures will be taken by that authority.
