ROBBERS armed with crowbars assaulted a respected butcher in his own home before fleeing with hundreds of pounds.

John Coleman, who runs John Coleman Butchers, was at his home in Langham Road, Boxted, at around 8.40pm on Friday.

Two men smashed their way in and attacked the 72-year-old before making off with a four-figure sum of cash.

Police are hoping to trace a man captured on CCTV in connection with the robbery.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment, but suffered no serious injury.

In a 50-year career Mr Coleman has built up a successful business supplying many outlets in Essex and Suffolk, including well-known pubs and restaurants.

He employs more than 30 people at his butchers and farm shop in Boxted.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Two men armed with crowbars forced their way into the property.

"A man inside was assaulted and a four-figure sum of cash was taken.

"The victim, a man in his 70s, was taken to hospital for treatment but he was not seriously injured.
