Job Title: CHIEF REPORTER, EVENING GAZETTE
Department: EDITORIAL
Responsible to: EDITOR-IN-CHIEF via the GROUP NEWS EDITOR


Main Objectives:


  • Writing and organising news stories, features and campaigns, taking the occasional picture and writing backgrounders.

  • To have a high profile in the newsroom, setting an example and encouraging, guiding and motivating other reporters.

  • To take on special assignments, as required.

  • To uphold and demonstrate the highest editorial standards and to lead by example.



Job Requirements


  • To identify, research and write exclusive stories/features.

  • To liaise with newsdesk to ensure papers are completed to deadline and to a high standard.

  • To delegate story ideas to other reporters and monitor their progress, in liaison with newsdesk.

  • To broaden knowledge of the Company's newspapers, embrace new media skills, take photos etc in line with the published skills audit.

  • To work largely off-diary and be expected to make effective use of his/her time.

  • To cultivate close links with important news contacts, including key figures in the community.

  • To represent the Company at appropriate social events.

  • To work on any Newsquest title, if required.

  • The jobholder is a manager and is expected to take an active role in policy shaping and promotional event activities.

  • To uphold and demonstrate the highest editorial standards and to lead by example.

  • To act as a good ambassador for the Company and to be willing to aid Newsquest's other media businesses such as web sites and broadcasting.

  • Providing guidance to trainees.

  • To set an example, encouraging, guiding and motivating other staff.

  • To be prepared to take on special assignments as required.

  • Working unsociable hours at short notice. Flexibility is a key element of the job.
