Hundreds of anti-pickpocket devices have been given out to shoppers in the latest bid to protect them from criminals.
Police and Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators handed out 700 free cat bells during a two-hour stint on Colchester High Street.
They hope the tiny devices will see valuables literally saved by the bell, as shoppers attach them to their purses and belongings to act as anti-theft warning devices.
Carole Dennis, Colchester Borough Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, said: "We just want to make people aware that there are pickpockets out there."
A thousand free cat bells will be given out by police and Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators in Colchester High Street on August 4.
