A campaign to get a pedestrian crossing installed opposite a sheltered housing complex has been launched today.

Mitch Mitchell, a district councillor for Clacton's Peter Bruff ward, has called for highways bosses to improve safety in Cloes Lane.

He has urged Essex County Council to act before there is an accident.

The Conservative councillor said: "I have lived here for 22 years and I know what the road is like - it can be deadly at peak times.

"The council will say there have been no deaths or serious accidents, but why wait for an accident to happen? They should put the thing in now."

No-one from St Clement's Court was able to comment, but it is understood they are privately supporting the campaign.

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "Following a recent approach from a district councillor, arrangements have been made to discuss the issues in Cloes Lane."
