A village school has hosted a weekend workshop in a bid to improve pre-school children's interest in science.

St Margaret's Preparatory school in Gosfield opened its doors to children as young as three during their Mad Science event held back in November.

Those who attended were able to learn about chemical reactions by making green slime which formed part of a hands on session.

The children also made the most of small stalls where small experiments aimed at improving learning was on offer.

Kevin Jarvis, Manager for Mad Science Essex and North East London, said the company helped to organise the session are to showcase how fun and exciting science can be.

He said: “We brought a number of exciting demonstrations and hands-on experiments including mad science slime, which the children got to take home, and dry ice, which we used for Harry Potter style potions.

"The children’s faces were a picture when we started the dry ice experiments, as soon as the bubbling potions started, so did the smiles."

St Margaret's headmaster, Callum Douglas, added: “It was a fabulous morning. To see children of this age learning in such a proactive way is always a joy.

"We are a school that prides itself on high standards of teaching and learning but what underpins all of that is children being happy. You could see how much the children were enjoying being scientists.”

The school is now planning to introduce a mad science after-school club due to the popularity of the weekend workshop.
