The Salvation Army is keen to talk with Essex fire chiefs about being contracted to help at the scene of an emergency.
Currently, the Salvation Army is under contract to the London Fire Service to attend any incident where five or more pumps attend.
But last week, 100 firefighters were sent to Parkeston after a major blaze in Europa Way.
Like many residents, Salvation Army Captains Barrie and Maria Sampson, who live in the Dovercourt area, woke to see thick black smoke coming from industrial units at the site.
The couple, who are based at the Citadel in George Street, Harwich, rushed to the scene to offer their help.
Not knowing what assistance might be needed, or what they could offer, they liaised with the sector commander from Essex Fire Services at the scene.
Where possible the Salvation Army supports all blue light services, not only in providing refreshments, but also in pastoral care at critical incidents.
