A mum has criticised Essex County Council after her son was rejected for her favoured schools.

Kelly Rolph moved to Towse Close, Clacton, in February, and made a late application for her 11-year-old son Daniel to attend either Colbayns or County High in the town this September.

Her preference was for the former because of its proximity to their home, while her 14-year-old brother is already a pupil there.

But she was angry to learn that Daniel must attend Bishops Park College, at Jaywick, instead.

The five-year-old school is under threat of closure because it does not have enough pupils.

The 30-year-old explained that her son has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and cannot get to school unattended.

Her district councillor, Mitch Mitchell, who has taken up her case, said: "This is totally wrong and smacks of trying to make up the numbers at Bishops Park."

However, Essex County Council said it was standing firm on its decision, emphasising that Miss Rolph's application was late.
