Time is running out for residents in Essex to have their say on plans for gipsy and traveller pitches around the county.

Different options are available for pitches in the county, which could see Colchester get either six or 15, while Tendring would get either two pitches or 15.

Opinions have to be sent to the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA) by July 31.

The assembly has outlined two options for Essex to spark debate - the first option would pitches distributed in local council areas where research has identified need, with 438 additional caravan pitches needed in Essex.

The second option would see a minimum of 15 pitches in every local council area across the region to provide a wider distribution and choice of accommodation for gypsies and travellers, with 405 additional caravan pitches in Essex.

John Reynolds, chairman of EERA's Regional Planning Panel, said: "This issue affects many people in Essex, and I would urge both the settled and the travelling communities to make their views known before the deadline."

The responses will be used to refine the proposals for the number of additional pitches needed in each local authority area, which will be published for further public consultation in early 2008.
