Residents have called for more police in their town after a gang violently attacked a couple.
Nearly 30 people signed a petition asking for increased patrols in Wivenhoe.
The petition was produced by councillor Peter Hill at a meeting of Wivenhoe Town Council.
Teacher Pat Smith and partner Terry Russell were assaulted in the King George V playing field on Saturday after they had made a make-shift camp in the park to watch stars.
Ms Smith, 53, suffered a fractured cheekbone after being kicked and punched, and Mr Russell, 60, was also injured.
Mr Hill said: "This has sent a shockwave throughout the community."
He said people were feeling "emotional" after the attack and needed reassurance.
Ken Rogers, of the community safety neighbourhood watch, told fellow councillors that Wivenhoe had one of the lowest crime levels per head in the country.
However, he was concerned there was a growing problem of troublemakers coming into the town.
Insp Tony Dale, of north Colchester's neighbourhood policing team, which covers Wivenhoe, said: "We are always willing to talk to the council about their concerns and policing there."
- Two men, aged 16 and 18, of Wivenhoe, have been arrested in connection with Saturday's assault.
- Police are appealing for witnesses to call them on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
