Plans for a state-of-the-art medical centre are to be dramatically scaled down after health bosses miscalculated the number of patients who would use it.

The proposed Great Clacton and Holland-on-Sea Primary Care Centre, in Kennedy Way, which was expected to cost more than £10 million, will now have to be redrawn.

The centre was meant to replace four surgeries - the Frinton Road Medical centre in Holland and surgeries in Queensway, Holland, Epping Close, Clacton, and North Road, Great Clacton.

Matt Bushell, director of strategic development at North East Essex Primary Care Trust (PCT), said a review of capacity and demand at the surgeries has shown 26,193 less patient spaces are required for the new centre than were thought.

Mr Bushell said he would now be setting a timetable for a review of how the PCT should progress with the plans, but he added that the PCT was committed to upgrading services.
